Keishia McLeod, CEO of Legacy Records, shares her experience of giving back to better the music industry.
WHAT DOES PHILANTHROPY MEAN TO YOU?
Putting my own unique spin on giving back to the community is something that excites me. Philanthropy goes beyond a quick charitable donation, and I know if I’m excited about it, I’m putting my 110% into that venture. I once heard Elon Musk say “you don’t always have to change the world as long as you are making some positive contribution” and that always stuck with me. However, I've always believed that if you are capable of something, then you have an obligation to make it a reality. If I aim to change the world, at any rate, at least I will make that positive contribution at some point along the way. It takes us all doing our part whatever that level is.
HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE COMMUNITY?
To me, it can be a group of people living in the same locality while bringing in their own unique backgrounds to help build a welcoming society. Between my entire team, they create music, imagery, and incredible art that tell stories. Having these elements portray the Legacy brand defines our sense of community and we love bringing that into other aspects including our involvement in the Las Vegas city.
HOW ARE YOU CONTRIBUTING TO EMPOWERING OTHERS IN YOUR AREA?
My team and I have been making bi-weekly trips to homeless shelters in Las Vegas as well as providing necessity kit giveaways in the greater Los Angeles area. These projects not only help provide food, clean water, blankets, and toiletries to unhoused individuals, but also showing them that we as a community are one inclusive family. We all have been through tough times in our lives and being in a position to give back as much as we can is really the most important thing at the end of the day.
HOW ARE YOU CONTRIBUTING TO THE EMPOWERMENT OF ARTISTS?
This was the sole purpose of creating the label. I dissected the way artists are compensated and we created better solutions for how they can truly build wealth. It’s really important to me that these artists don’t just appear to have a certain lifestyle and behind the scenes be struggling. We help them create a roadmap for the future and execute their vision.
