It’s one thing to be on the cutting edge of fashion, but Givenchy wants to be on the cutting edge of life itself.
Since June of 2020, Matthew M. Williams has helped steer the French luxury fashion house Givenchy toward new heights as its latest Creative Director. Today, that means a step into the world of digital art with a collection of 15 NFTs designed in collaboration with New York City graphic artist Chito.
"I’ve been wanting to explore this new and exciting space of NFTs,” Williams says in a press release. “The fact that Chito is already active in the ecosystem made it feel even more natural for us to collaborate on this limited series and bring our collective vision for Givenchy even further.”
The NFTs are a companion to Givenchy’s Spring 2022 collection of clothing and accessories which launches today. The unique line features hoodies, dresses, tops, bottoms, shoes and bags all airbrushed with characters and symbols of Chito’s design. His linear, spray-paint style adds an air of streetwear and graffiti edge to the luxury line.
The NFTs mirror the looks, featuring the same graphic designs as the collection. As environmental concerns continue to swirl around the NFT market, Givenchy teamed with the Polygon network, known for its minimal energy consumption, to bring the collection to life.
The French fashion house has seen the impact NFTs can have for artists like Chito, giving creators a platform for exposure, control and monetization. The French house isn’t alone in this digital venture. Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci and Burberry have all explored the exciting space of NFTs.
The Givenchy and Chito NFTs launch on the Open Sea marketplace Tuesday, Nov. 23. Bidding will be open for a period of seven days. Proceeds from the auction will help support The Ocean Cleanup, a nonprofit engineering environmental oganization dedicated to extracting plastic polluction from Earth’s waterways via developing technologies.
