The guest list for the 1995 grand opening of The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino made Las Vegas pop culture history.
Wham bam thank you Pam! Tommy Lee smooches his then-wife, Pamela Anderson, at the mega-fête for the debut of Peter Morton’s Hard Rock Hotel.
The year was 1995, and a mythic-if-motley crew that included newlyweds Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson, Jack Nicholson, and an E.R.-era George Clooney touched down in Vegas for the debut of Peter Morton’s Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Far from your average LV grand opening, the weekend’s festivities featured a star-studded guest roster at the hotel’s Joint theater to view a lineup of live performances by A-list acts bridging the gen gap from the Eagles to Sheryl Crow, who after-partied in style at the latest place to see and be seen in Vegas, the circular Center Bar. Morton’s risky theme proved prescient: Now celebrating its 21st year, the Hard Rock is still going strong—quite a feat given the hotel’s off-Strip location and radical de-emphasis on gaming. With a cool $3-million upgrade of the iconic Center Bar unveiled this past September, the property plans to keep the party rolling for another two decades… and then some. Rock on.
