Ellie Kemper won our hearts with her quirky and hilarious roles in The Office, Bridesmaids, and in the Tina Fey-created Netflix series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which premieres its second season on April 15. We recently chatted with the actress—who by the way is just as warm and charming as she appears on screen—about her latest starring role in Buick’s digital campaign celebrating the brand’s sexy new Cascada convertible. Kemper injects her delightful sense of humor into a series of funny videos, in which she fantasizes about what it would be like to be a spokeswoman for the automaker.
Below, find out how Kemper stays convertible-ready, what we can expect from season two of her show, and what Fey is like as a boss.
What can fans expect from season two of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt? ELLIE KEMPER: I think the second season is even better than the first season because you get to know all the characters a little bit better. I think Kimmy sort of thought that everything was all clean and done and wrapped up and put away once she put the reverend in jail, and that all her worries would be behind her and the world was her oyster. In this season, she really learns that the past is sort of always with you. Just because one thing is taken care of, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t a lot of other steps to address and deal with. There’s also a lot of cameos—some I can not mention, but some I can. There’s Anna Camp and Fred Armisen.
Can you relate to Kimmy at all? EK: One thing I don’t share with Kimmy, but would like to, is her relentless optimism. It is refreshing. I think you’re automatically in a better mood if you’re wearing hot pink pants, but she’s had this horrific thing happen to her and she just refused to allow it to dictate her future. I think that’s really admirable. She takes control of what she can take control of, which I think is empowering.
What’s it like working with Tina Fey? EK: It’s fantastic. I, along with the rest of America, was an enormous fan of hers going into this, so getting to work with her has been very dream-like. She is a wonderful boss. She is quiet. She is focused. She is very kind and is all about the work.
What do you do to stay healthy and always look convertible-ready? EK: I need to exercise pretty much everyday for that burst of endorphins. It helps to keep me focused and it keeps me from getting in a bad mood. I love SoulCycle. I love running. I do a lot of Bar Method, which is like a core strengthening class. Those are my three go-tos, but I’m always open to new ideas. I want to try to do some more yoga for flexibility and also the mind benefits.
