Wynn Las Vegas sparkled with jewels and timepieces as the world’s most esteemed designers gathered for the Couture Show. Known as one of the most exclusive gatherings of fine jewelry talent, The Couture Show returns annually. Retailers, wholesalers, high profile stylists and press come together to appreciate the hard work and creativity of leading designers.
The Couture Awards add an element of recognition as designers compete by submitting their most outstanding pieces. Couture Award winner Nikos Koulis attended the show this year as both an exhibitor and a judge for the Couture Awards.
Designers ranged from small family owned business brands like 64Facets known for their niche rose cut pieces to celebrity favored brands like Ara Vartanian whose earrings have adorned actresses Priyanka Chopra, Allison Janney among others. Luxury designers shared their newest collections and most well-loved designs for buyers and their clients.
We had the opportunity to catch up with Ara Vartanian himself. He expressed of the Conscious Mining Program he so passionately backs, “Brands like mine and many others are the voice to teach the consumers and manufacturers. The independent jewelers can make a difference.” Vartanian further explained the gravity of questioning and discovering the conditions of the mines, the surrounding environment, the locals and the social and economic statuses of the region of origin of materials to source responsibly.
Many designers expressed the same notion regarding their sourcing methods including Lepa Galeb-Roskopp of Misahara Fine Jewelry. Not only does the artistic process and the end product matter to such designer, but the ethical implications tied to their manufacturers' conduct of business and treatment of workers and the land from which they source.
We spoke with Ece Sarin designer and founder of Bee Goddess Luxury Fine Diamonds about the purpose behind her bee collection. “Look at the society of bees; they work together and make honey together. What it tells us is to work for each other, collaborate and serve each other. I love that: to work together, not against each other.”
A common trend presents itself with the designers at the Couture Show. Their designs are much more than their final consumer, more than their retailers and more than the awards they win. Many of the artists are driven by a deep purpose to make a difference in the industry and to inspire and remind others through their art to live better lives.
