A red carpet photo op could materialize on any given night at a hot spot entrance, while the beautiful people in an upscale nightclub VIP section often appear as if they’ve been cast by a modeling agency and draped in designer duds. Yet more often than not in Las Vegas, effort in nightlife attire has fallen by the wayside. By no means should you max out your AmEx to make a statement (especially in this economy), but we’ve gotten lazy. Fashionistas cringe, scenesters snicker and bloggers ridicule the fashion faux pas that have run rampant in our city.
For the ladies, a few nightlife trends desperately need to halt. Nothing ruins a gorgeous dress or flirty top more than inappropriate or inadequate undergarments. Visible bra straps (even of the clear variety) are an atrocity to fashion and cheapen a look. Victoria’s Secret makes multiple convertible bras that lift and hold through even the fastest club mix.
Also, investing in a good wristlet can alleviate the inconvenience of clinging to a clutch all night or resorting to storing items like IDs, cell phones and lip gloss in one’s décolletage. Guess offers a variety of moderately priced clutches/wristlets large enough for a cell phone, compact and other nightclubbing necessities, including an essential new lip gloss favorite, MAC’s Dazzleglass in Sugarrimmed.
Unless your goal is to be mistaken for a lady of the night, barely-there spandex dresses have got to go. Opt for fashions that accentuate the bust line or svelte gams—not both. The bright lipstick and neutral eye shadow (or vice versa) rule also applies to clothing in that one should choose which asset to focus on, not draw the eye anywhere and everywhere. Consider something sleek and simple with peek-a-boo cutouts to entice the imagination.
The gents are not without fault either. It’s difficult to pinpoint when rhinestone teesand sneakers replaced suits and dressing to impress for a night out. Even just bringing the button-down back would be a step in the right direction. Dressing up jeans with a blazer/vest combo does wonders.
It may seem obvious, but years have gone by with the same infractions spotted again and again in the lines outside Vegas clubs. Mixing and matching subtle wardrobe staples is key for the frequent partier. Simplicity has become as important as shoe inserts (so one doesn’t end up walking barefoot through a parking lot after a night of dancing. Fortunately flats were spotted sashaying down runways at New York’s Fashion Week, so there’s another practical yet stylish option).
Often on your way to a Vegas hot spot, you’ll pass no fewer than a half-dozen boutiques and designer shops. Perhaps it’s time we consider stopping in for something snazzy.
