Regardless of experience with the terrain, these hiking trails truly rock in the Las Vegas area.
DISTANCE: 2.2 miles
DETAILS ON THE ROUTE: For the most captivating view of Vegas, Calico Tank Trail guides its hikers over a cluster of sandstone into
a hidden water pocket. The trail gets its name from the process by which the rocks have formed large, water-collecting holes. Revealing the stunning Red Rock Canyon, the magnificent rock formations are rich with history and geology.
TERRAIN TIP: While this trail may be open to the public year-round, intermediate hikers will find the route most enjoyable from October through April.
DISTANCE: 1.1 miles
DETAILS ON THE ROUTE: Over the sandstone and through the narrow canyon hikers shall
go! Marked by a variety of terrain, color and rock shapes, this steep yet charming trail takes its visitors through ruin imitations and steep, slim openings. This picturesque park was too striking not to use as a backdrop in films like Transformers, Casino, Total Recall, Star Trek: Generations and Austin Powers. Looking back is ultimately the best part, as the natural beauty and progression of the trail is hard not to jaw-drop over.
TERRAIN TIP: Since the ending is undeniably the biggest reward, the last stretch of the trail has picnic tables and bathrooms, making for a scenic and serene way to enjoy a post-hike meal.
DISTANCE: 4.1 miles
DETAILS ON THE ROUTE: At Petroglyph Canyon, which begins at the Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area, art history enthusiasts meet the great outdoors. This trail takes its visitors through a plethora of pictographs, highlighting over 300 separate rock art panels and 1,700 individual designs. Capturing eons of history from archaic individuals to 19th century settlers, this journey of admiring animal figures, staged hunts and shapes will call for several pit stops.
TERRAIN TIP: At this spot, art o’clock starts in March and lasts until October.
DISTANCE: 1.5 miles
DETAILS ON THE ROUTE: Nestled
in Overton, just an hour from Vegas, this scenic trail lies in the oldest and largest state park in Nevada. Hikers marvel over the rock formations on this route, swirling and bursting with hues of red, white and pink sandstone. All levels are encouraged to explore, whether it be one’s first trail adventure or as a frequent activity. Furry friends are also welcome to join the climb but must be kept on a leash at all times.
