Fresh off a Las Vegas trip to promote his spring line at MAGIC’s FN Platform, shoe designer Sam Edelman talks upcoming trends, and how Kate Upton became the face of his newest collection.
How do you define your brand, and its fabulous shoes?
SAM EDELMAN: We like to reinvent and re-imagine, and we create a tremendous amount of excitement at a contemporary price point.
Tell us about your upcoming Sam & Libby capsule collection for Target.
SE: It will hit stores May 5. It’s not a copy of Sam Edelman by any means at all, but it still reflects the personality that [my wife] Libby and I brought to the industry in the last 35 years. So it will be fun, whimsical, innovative, incredibly affordable, and certainly geared to a wonderfully savvy customer.
You have the lovely Kate Upton in your new spring ad campaigns. What made you choose her?
SE: Kate is known to wear Sam Edelman casual and flats as well. The ads speak to the sexier, higher heels mixed with the ballerina flats. We are known as the kings of the ballet business in every collection that we do. You go out at night and you have your Sam Edelman ballets in your bag . . . Libby and I personify the great American dream and I feel the same way about Kate Upton. The American girl with no pretense; she’s real, she’s beautiful, she reminds me of Jayne Mansfield and Marilyn Monroe.
What are your personal favorites from the new spring collection?
SE: The Gigi, which is our thong, which drives our business. It’s a great iconic status shoe from Sam Edelman. I love the more hippie higher-heeled shoes that really scream Morocco meets Venice, California. I also love the use of metal studs, and also pieces of metal. A big thing for us always and consistently is tribal beading, and there are wonderful mixtures of tribal beading with materials in our spring line.
What is your impression of the fashion scene in Vegas?
SE: I’ve been coming to Vegas for shows for 35 years and I believe you have some of the greatest retail and foot traffic in the world. I love the spirit and energy of Vegas and I think it has the best restaurants in the world. I love the fact that this city never sleeps.
